If you own any type of cannabis business, you understand how hard it can be to reach and market to new customers digitally.
Google and Facebook won’t let you run any ads with any words that are related to cannabis, THC, or weed. Just because you can’t spend money on paid advertisements online doesn’t mean there isn’t a way for you to build your business!
That’s why I put together this guide to teach you how to excel at cannabis marketing and do it legally.
Top-Notch SEO Plan
The only way to show up on a Google search as a cannabis company is by having the best SEO strategy out there. You need to create content that answers the questions your clients have and do it often.
A good rule of thumb is to post a new blog post at least once per week, but you should be posting daily for an aggressive strategy. I know posting unique, educational, and informative blog posts daily is a lot, but that’s why you should start making content now.

Build Your Social Fanbase
Let me be clear here: even if you own a dispensary and can legally sell cannabis in your state, that does not mean you are allowed to advertise the sales of cannabis on social media. Now that we have that cleared up, let’s talk about how to create your loyal fanbase. No matter the industry, the best way to build your social media following is by creating engaging content.
This means posting about things your audience finds interesting, such as a 360° video of a nug or a picture of a new vaporizer you just got in. Check how your fanbase is engaging with your content, and make sure to keep posting similar content.
For example, I have a small retail client who posts customer reviews and new products along with other general information. Our goal on Facebook is to get engagement on our posts. We found that when we post quotes from clients, we get the best engagement. Therefore, we increased the number of quote posts we do per month to improve overall engagement.
Find what your fans like, and post that content the most.
Never, Ever Market To Minors
If you have a cannabis-related business, you should be well aware of the laws regarding marketing to minors. If you go to a cannabis-related site, you’ve no doubt noticed they ask you to confirm your age before showing you the content.
When it comes to cannabis marketing, we have to be even more careful. You should set your page to only show to people who are of age. This will help ensure you’re only posting your content to people who can legally consume it.
