Musician Marketing: Why Musicians Need A Website And An EPK

With all of the free platforms out there for you to put your music, you’re probably wondering why you even need a website or EPK. Why pay for a website, and the creation of a professional EPK when you can just post your content for free on social media?

I get it, I really do! But, the fact is, even in the age of streaming and social media you still need to have a website and EPK, and that won’t change anytime soon.

Keep reading to learn more about musician marketing, and the importance of a website AND an EPK.

Why You Need A Website

On your website, you can post anything and everything you want. You’re in complete control of the layout, the language, and the style. There are no distractions, just your content to share with your fans.

When you buy your domain, keep it hosted, and renew every year, you own that piece of the internet. That’s yours, no one can take it away, even if you change your hosting provider, or move your domain, you’ll always own that spot online.

The same can’t be said about social media platforms. Take Vine for example, in 2012 the world was first introduced to Vine. It had a decent run, making it to 2016 when it was killed completely. If your entire base was only on Vine, you would have lost them all. Sure, you can go to another platform, start over and hope people find you again, but to get back to where you were would be tough.

Diversification is the best way to reach a broad audience, don’t limit yourself to only social media platforms or streaming sites! Take control with a website of your very own.

You can also sell your merchandise and have people book you right through your website. If you’re not doing it on your own site, you’re missing out on money. Whenever you sell through another platform you’re giving them a percentage of what you’ve earned, don’t give it away!

Why You Need an EPK

An EPK, as you probably know, is an electronic press kit. It’s your way to communicate quick information to journalists and the media in a fast format. Even if you have a website, you still need an EPK!

Any platform you’re on, there’s clutter. Your website most likely has multiple pages, your Facebook and YouTube have different formats and descriptions. Instagram barely lets you talk about yourself except for in posts, but if you post a lot some of those get lost. Don’t make someone who wants to write about you filter through the noise!

An EPK should include information that the media would find interesting, in a format that draws their eyes. Don’t just give them a white piece of paper with a bunch of links on it.

Your EPK should include:

  • Promotional photos
  • Links to other media coverage
  • Your bio
  • Links to music
  • Notable performances
  • Links to social media
  • Contact information

Why You Need Both

Your EPK is for people who want to write about you, your website is for people who want to listen to your music. Include your website link on your EPK, and you should have your EPK available on your website.
